A device designed to fix a sheet of paper or canvas at a given height with a certain slope is called an easel. It is used by artists for whom these parameters are important.

Drawing enthusiasts choose a device based on their own anthropometry, habits and preferences.

How to make an easel for painting

There are several types of easels:

  • stationary. Placed on the floor, it is considered the most practical and convenient. The excellent characteristics of the design explain its use at exhibitions and in advertising;
  • The tripod is lightweight and small in size. The folding design is convenient for travel, for walks and drawing;
  • the clapperboard is considered a student variation. A simple device with a board at the top. Wondering how to make your own easel? This type is lighter than the others;
  • tabletop is suitable for beginner painters who paint small canvases;
  • a tablet or sketchbook, similar to compact suitcases with a tripod for installation anywhere.

There are other design options that combine functions or are modernizations of the main types.

For those who are passionate about drawing, this device is necessary. You can make it yourself, or buy it by choosing a model that matches the characteristics in the BoardSYS store catalog. Our managers will help you choose the best manufacturer at the price.

If you decide to experiment on your own, let’s consider making one of the options at home step by step.

DIY tabletop easel drawings with dimensions

This product will significantly save money and space (if it is not enough in small rooms). The easiest way to make a firecracker is in the tabletop variation.

You will need the following materials and tools:

  • plywood;
  • screwdriver, hammer;
  • nuts, bolts, screws;
  • slats made of pine or beech;
  • glue, pencil, notebook;
  • double-sided fastenings.

Measure the length of slats you need (4 pieces), guided by the drawing. 2 more slats along the width of the device will connect them together. Make holes 2 cm from the edge of the slats and connect them in the shape of the letter “P”.

There should be two such details. Secure them with loops. Attach plywood to the base with a shelf at the bottom. A double-sided model with two boards can be provided.

You can make the device without plywood. This is a more complex modification.

To assemble the easel, use the instructions in the picture.

How to make an easel with your own hands

We cut the bars to size:

1 piece - 146 cm, 1 pc. - 154 cm, 2 pcs. - 168 cm, 1 pc. - 39 cm, 1 pc. - 53 cm.

We sand the bars with an electric sander and sand the ends with sandpaper. I used pine. It has a lot of knots, so you need to choose suitable slats. Pine “flakes” when processed manually, so you need to use a power tool. The main advantage of this type of wood for work is the low cost of the material.

After all the bars are sanded, we begin to assemble the frame of our easel. To do this as accurately and evenly as possible, we use a tiled floor: right angles between the tiles serve as a guide for aligning the slats.

We begin the assembly with the central rail - 146 cm, we place it parallel to the seam on the tiled floor. If you don't have the option to use a tile floor, you can draw a line on the regular floor or make a temporary line out of duct tape. This will create the axis of our future easel, and the assembly will proceed relative to it.

We assemble two supports - 168 cm each, overlap the slats of 39 and 53 cm. To fasten the slats together, we pre-drill holes using a drill d = 6mm, coat the joints with wood glue, fix the slats relative to each other, secure the joints with self-tapping screws.

Using a loop, we attach a 154 cm rear support to the 39 cm rear rail in the center. We adjust it in length. For fastening I also use a drill d=6 mm.

Arranging a shelf for the subframe: we need a platband 5 cm wide and 60 cm long. There are only 3 of these pieces. Using a drill d=8 mm, we make two holes at a distance of 15 cm from the edge. Using a hammer and nails, we fasten the two planks together at an angle of 90 degrees, so that they form a shelf. The back bar will serve as the holder for this shelf.

Let the glue dry and the next day we finish assembling the easel: put it in a horizontal position, install a shelf for the stretcher. We adjust it in height. We attach the hinged hook that secures the rear support. You can choose a clear varnish, stain or paint to suit your taste. Now your easel is completely ready!

Step-by-step instructions for making your own tabletop easel

Let's take a closer look at the entire process of making a tabletop easel.

Illustration Description of action
Saw the timber into sections, make bevels on the legs at an angle of 15º.

Assemble the structure and secure it with clothespins.
File a 15º angle on the center planks and remove saw marks using a miter plane.

Cut down a few thinner pieces.

Fold the stop mechanism, the central post should move freely between the slats.
Before gluing, the elements must be sanded and the cut area smoothed.

Drill a hole in the center bar and make a notch for the cap.
Cut a groove for the brass plate and screw it onto a self-tapping screw.

Glue the bevel strips and fasten with screws.
Sand all the blocks and secure them with self-tapping screws. The legs can be covered with leather so that they do not slide on the tabletop.

Varnish the finished easel.

Floor easels: detailed DIY workshops

The use of easels began more than 6 centuries ago. In those days, they served not only as a stand for paper, but also often acted as a decorative element in the homes of artists, who displayed finished works of art on them for public viewing.

There are several types of easel designs:

  • “Lyre” or A-shaped structure on three posts;
  • The H-shaped easel is a more durable design for indoor use. It is most often used in art schools or professional workshops;
  • a hybrid or transformable easel is very similar to an H-shaped easel, but with more adjustments;
  • The easel is designed for professional work by real artists with large canvases. Most often it can be found in restoration workshops;
  • mast - this is the simplest design. Today it is most often used for exhibition purposes.

Folding easel "Lyra"

A simpler design of the easel is the folding “Lyre”; its production will take only 1-2 hours. This is where we will begin our master classes.

What materials and tools will be needed for the job?

In order for the process to proceed smoothly and nothing to distract from creative work, you need to prepare all the tools and materials in advance. We will need:

  • drill and drill bits of different diameters;
  • 5 slats measuring 20x45 mm, length 2 m;
  • self-tapping screws;
  • loop – 1 pc.;
  • sander;
  • bolts with wing nuts – 2 pcs.;
  • the board is 63 cm long and about 80-10 cm wide.

Cut the slats to the following sizes:

  • 2 pcs. – 168 cm each;
  • 1 piece – 154 cm;
  • 1 piece – 146 cm;
  • 1 piece – 53 cm;
  • 1 piece – 39 cm;
  • 3 pcs. – 60 cm each.

Be sure to sand or sand all the slats.

Preparation of the drawing

Any work begins with the creation of a drawing; all easel sizes are selected individually. When drawing up a sketch you should consider:

  • the height of the two front pillars is equal to the height of a person, on average it is 170 cm;
  • the width of the easel at the base is usually 60-70 cm;
  • the rear support is slightly lower than the racks and is equal to 155 cm;
  • the length of the jumpers that connect the racks is 40 and 55 cm.

Advice! Before starting work, you need to place the racks, supports and lintels on the floor and adjust all lengths and distances to your liking.

Step-by-step instructions for making your own easel “Lyra”

After you have decided on the dimensions, drawn up a drawing and prepared all the material, you can begin to work. Our step-by-step instructions will help you cope with difficulties.

Illustration Description of action

A 146 cm rail is the base of the easel; place horizontal slats of 39 cm and 53 cm relative to it.

The distance from the top point to the horizontal bar is 55 cm, from the bottom point to the bar is 3 cm.

Use a drill to make holes in the center of the cross bars for attaching to the rack.

Secure the horizontal slats to the central pillar using self-tapping screws.

Lay out 168 cm long side slats symmetrically.

Make holes and secure the slats together using self-tapping screws.

Attach the loop using self-tapping screws, first to the central stand of the easel, then to the 154 cm long leg.

For a shelf, drill 2 holes in two 60 cm long slats closer to the edge.

Nail one strip with holes perpendicular to the other without notches.

Insert the bolts into the holes, place the shelf on the easel and connect it to the third rail using wing screws.

You can create this easel in less than an hour.

Advice! Be sure to varnish or paint the easel. This way you will protect it from harmful influences and extend its service life.

Double-sided children's easel

Special double-sided easels are produced for children's art schools and clubs. Children can draw their landscapes from two opposite sides. If there are several children growing up in a family, be sure to make a comfortable stand for them with your own hands.

children's easel double-sided

What do you need for work?

For work we will need the following materials and tools:

  • wooden slats slightly longer than the child’s height – 4 pcs.;
  • 2 wooden slats of 50 cm each for fastening under the paintings;
  • 2 wooden slats of 40 cm each for side fastening;
  • round strip 60 cm long for paper;
  • plywood 3 mm thick;
  • self-tapping screws and 2 hinges;
  • sandpaper;

Nuances of drawing preparation

Any work should begin with preparing a template. It is important to decide in advance how adults or children will create at the easel: sitting or standing, and, based on this, determine the height of the structure. For a children's stand, the main value is the height of the child. It is necessary to think about the height so that the top border of the paper is not higher than your head.

The height of easels for adults ranges from 140-170 cm. It is also important to provide a place for attaching paper; you can install an additional stand for the roll. Our easel is a simple structure, consisting of four blocks and two sheets of plywood.

We offer you to look at interesting options for ready-made stands.

Step-by-step instructions for making a children's double-sided easel

Detailed master class on making a double-sided layout.

  1. Saw the slats to the specified dimensions, connecting the long ones with loops at the top.
  2. Determine the center on long posts, and fasten 50 cm long slats across the front and back with self-tapping screws.
  3. Drill holes on the side rails just below the middle and fasten horizontal strips 40 cm long between them.
  4. On both sides, in the middle of the side slats, drill holes for attaching a round strip for paper.
  5. Secure the plywood on both sides.
  6. Attach pencil shelves to the front support strips under the plywood.

Advice! The structure can be made collapsible. To do this, the side planks should be secured only on one side, and in the second, cut a recess for a self-tapping screw or install a hook instead of a wooden slat.

Portable sketchbook

Another type of easel is a sketchbook, which you can make with your own hands. It is designed for work outside the home. Its main advantage is that all the artist’s tools are stored inside.

portable sketchbook

What you need to prepare for work

For work we will need:

  • saw and jigsaw;
  • sander or sandpaper;
  • slats;
  • plywood;
  • piano loop;
  • screws 10 and 21 mm;
  • thick PVA;
  • 2 folding furniture brackets, they will keep the lid raised;
  • lid lock or latch;
  • furniture varnish.

The size of our sketchbook must be designed in such a way that A4 sheets can easily fit into it.

Preparation of the drawing

For our sketchbook you will need to create a drawing in which you need to take into account the following parameters:

  • for the body you will need to make a box from plywood L×W×H – 50×35×6 cm;
  • the lid will be of similar dimensions, only slightly thinner;
  • for the sidewalls, 10-12 mm thick slats or plywood are suitable;
  • To make internal jumpers, pockets should first be planned on the drawing.

Step-by-step instructions for making a sketchbook

Let's look at the whole process in more detail.

  1. Assemble the frames of the lid and body of the sketchbook using screws.
  2. Using a saw, cut out the back and front walls from thin plywood up to 4 mm thick
  3. Sand all parts first with coarser sandpaper, then with fine sandpaper.
  4. Secure the plywood to the body and lid.
  5. Cut partitions from thin plywood and secure them with glue and self-tapping screws to the body.
  6. Use a piano loop to secure the lid and body.
  7. Install the furniture hinge on the inside of the lid and on the side of the cabinet. It will hold the lid open.
  8. Attach a hook to the outside of the box so that the sketchbook does not open while being carried.
  9. Attach the handles for carrying the sketchbook. These can be strips of leather, tarpaulin or other durable material.
  10. Attach rotary paper holders to the lid.
  11. Coat the sketchbook with varnish in 2-3 layers.

Conclusion

All easels discussed in our review have a simple design. You can easily make them yourself, even without carpentry skills. If desired, the models can be modified with collapsible legs, stands for glasses of water and brushes, and more convenient carrying. The main thing is not to be afraid to experiment.

Finally, we offer a master class on making another simple tabletop easel.

I’ve been wanting to buy an easel for a long time, but I don’t have the time and the prices are prohibitive. Then I started looking for diagrams or drawings of the easel on the Internet and... found nothing. They are not there. I started looking at pictures, studying, and decided to make it myself.

No sooner said than done. I bought a beam, sketched out a drawing and made it. And you know, it didn’t turn out bad.
The easel turned out to be very light, folding, dismountable and versatile.
The fact is that when making the easel, the main task was to make it foldable so that it could be stored and transported compactly, and the second point is that you could draw on the easel both while sitting and standing. Those. the bar on which the canvas stands had to be adjusted in height. I managed to do all this, but how it turned out is up to you to judge.

Materials:

Bars 20x40 mm.
Piano loop
Bolts 6x50 mm, washers, nuts (wings). x 5 pcs.

Difficulty 4.
Operating time 1.5 hours.

I present to your attention a drawing of my own making. The drawing can be downloaded in large size on my blog.

For greater aesthetics, the easel can be covered with stain or varnished.

Sooner or later, the question arises about convenience when drawing, let’s say about your workplace, if you draw on, or on flat small surfaces, then you simply need an easel. In fact, this is not such a scarce thing; in principle, you can find it at a reasonable price, but I decided to take a different path and make an easel just for myself. Without being cunning for long, I looked at photos on the Internet and decided to make myself a three-legged easel. Having sketched out a diagram of the easel on paper, estimating the approximate dimensions, I went to a hardware store, where I bought myself wooden blocks, a hinge, bolts, screws, a lamb and the simplest tinting varnish, after which I actually began the process of manufacturing, painting and assembly. This is what I ended up with!

The drawing of the easel itself.

I haven’t drawn anything for a long time, and the drawing itself was made, let’s say, quickly in Photoshop, and not in a drawing program as it was in my student years.

Disassembled easel.

After all the cutting, drilling, and painting, I got the following parts.

Assembled easel.

The easel is in working order.

Total spent:
Plank 40*18*200 - 4 pcs
Plank 30*18*200 - 2 pcs
Loop - 1 piece
Bolts 8*80 - 6 pcs
Bolt 8*100 - 1 piece
Washers d8 - 10 pcs.
Lamb d8 - 7 pcs
Self-tapping screws

For the legs, I would still recommend using slightly thicker planks; 18mm is not enough in my opinion. The easel was clearly not a portable one, but that’s what I needed. In principle, reducing the height of such a structure is not a problem, that is, making it more compact, but then it is necessary to recalculate the dimensions of the legs and drilling the holes in the stand for the canvas and the supports themselves.
